What if my Postback URL doesn’t seem to be working properly?

Your Postback URL will work correctly every time the correct information is posted back to it.

If you’re having problems, this article covers the only possible explanations. Select what tracking method you are using to learn more about why your Postback URL is not working.

1.    You’re not correctly passing a Visitor ID to your affiliate link using ClickMagick’s tokens, as explained in this article:

How do I track sales using Postback URLs?

2.    You’re not using all lowercase for the [cmc_vid] token in your affiliate link. The token is case-sensitive and MUST be all lowercase. You can open the Postback Log to see a list of the most recent Postbacks you have received. If the variable “s1” shows something like s1=[CMC_VID] in the Request column, then this is the problem. You should see a large number instead of capitalized letters.

3.    You’re passing the Visitor ID correctly to your landing page URL, but you don’t have the cmc.js code on the page with the affiliate link. Make sure to check all the pages in your funnel and confirm that the first and last pages have the correct cmc.js code. 4.    You haven’t set up your Postback URL in your affiliate network. If your Postback URL is not set up correctly, you’re probably not even going to see an entry in the Postback Log. To find the correct Postback URL for your network, go to the Postback URL Tool in the main Tools menu.

You also need to make sure that you select the correct tracking type in your affiliate back office for the offer you’re promoting, and be sure to enter your Postback URL in the right place. Please confirm with your affiliate manager that you’ve done this correctly if necessary.

If the affiliate network you’re working with is ClickBank, they have a unique way of setting up their Postback URLs, which they call “Instant Notification URLs.” We have a special article that will walk you through the process of setting up your ClickBank account:

5.    You’ve correctly set everything up, but you set it up after the sale or reset your stats. It’s important to remember that sales are recorded as they happen, so sales won’t retroactively show up in ClickMagick after you’ve set up your Postback URL. Only new sales will show up in your stats.

6.    If you’re positive that you’ve set everything up correctly and you’re still showing conversions in your affiliate stats that aren’t appearing in ClickMagick, the only possible explanation is that your affiliate network isn’t posting the conversion data to your ClickMagick Postback URL.

You can check this by going to the Postback Log and seeing if any Postbacks are showing. If not, double-check that you’ve set up your Postback URL with your affiliate network. If it looks like that was already done correctly, contact your Affiliate Manager to see if they can determine why their system isn’t posting back correctly.

2.    You’re not using all lowercase for the [clickid] token in your affiliate link. The token is case-sensitive and MUST be all lowercase. You can open the Postback Log to see a list of the most recent Postbacks you have received. If the variable “s1” shows something like s1=[CLICKID] in the Request column, then this is the problem. You should see a large number instead of capitalized letters.

6.    The sale is being recorded but to a tracking link other than the one you’re expecting it to. This is easy to check. Go to the Postback Log and see the “Link Slug” column. That will tell you which link the sale was attributed to. To see the link name, hover your mouse over the link slug.

7.    If a click is flagged and shows up in the FC column of your stats, no [clickid] is generated for that particular click, but the click is still redirected to your affiliate link. In this case,

if the click is a real person who makes a purchase, the sale will be recorded with your affiliate network, but no sale will be recorded with ClickMagick because the affiliate network doesn’t have a click ID to post back to ClickMagick.

A flagged click rarely results in a sale, so this almost certainly isn’t the problem, but it could help explain some rare discrepancies.

These are the ONLY explanations why some or all of your affiliate sales aren’t being recorded in ClickMagick, so please start at the top and go through each step to verify that you’ve done everything correctly.

If you’ve done all that and still can’t figure out the problem, don't hesitate to contact our live chat or submit a ticket explaining exactly what you’ve done (with screenshots if possible) and what’s not working the way you expect. The more information you can provide, the better.
