How do I track conversions with Tracking Links and Tracking Pixels?


Note: Tracking conversions with Tracking Links along with Tracking Pixels is an outdated form of tracking, and due to industry-wide changes and the phasing out of “third party cookies” it’s becoming less and less accurate every day.

You REALLY should be using ClickMagick Campaigns for your conversion tracking instead. It’s way more accurate, and more powerful, than Tracking Links.

If you’re still sure you want to track conversions with Tracking Links, here’s what you need to know …

First, you need to create a tracking pixel—a small piece of HTML or JavaScript code—that you then insert on the page where you want a conversion recorded.

For instance, if you want to record when visitors opt-in to your email list, you could place a pixel on the “Thank You” page that your visitors are sent to after opting in. With this setup, a conversion is recorded every time someone makes it to your Thank You page, telling you exactly how many people entered their email addresses.

To create a tracking pixel, you would use the Pixel Builder, which you can find in the Tracking Links Tools menu under the Tracking Pixels sub-menu. You can create an Action pixel, an Engagement pixel, or a Sales pixel. 

Action and Engagement pixels behave identically, the only difference being which column the data appears in. “Actions” will be shown in the “A” column of your stats, and “Engagements” will be shown in the “E” column.

Sales pixels will be recorded in the “S” column of your stats, but because Sales pixels also include an “amount” setting, that amount will be used to compute other stats, such as your earning-per-click (EPC).
 
 
 
 
Tip: ClickMagick uses “universal” or “global” pixels, which means that the same Action, Engagement, or Sales pixel will work with any tracking link—when a pixel fires, it will typically refer back to the most recently encountered tracking link. Each pixel can have several options, depending on what you’re trying to do. The Pixel Builder will help you create any pixel you need.

For more detailed instructions and notes about using tracking pixels, please read the following …
 
1.    Because tracking pixels are HTML “display” elements, they must be added to the <body></body> section of your web page, anywhere between the opening and the closing tags. They cannot be added to the <head>...</head> section or they will not “fire” and be recorded.
 
2.    For sales tracking, you should enter the amount in the Pixel Builder with the actual sales value if you know what it is.

If your sales value varies, you can replace 0.00 with a placeholder or token that will dynamically insert the sales value. This placeholder or token will vary depending on your payment processing system, shopping cart, etc. Review your payment processor’s documentation or ask their support desk to get the placeholder or token their system uses.
 
3.    The “Reference” value in the tracking pixel code is for an optional reference value such as a product or offer name, an internal tracking code or ID or anything else you want. Typical values would be “opt-in”, “checkout”, “upsell1”, etc.

You can set the optional “Reference” value in the Pixel Builder. If provided, the value must be from 1 to 255 characters containing only letters, numbers, hyphens (“-”) and underscores (“_”). The “space” character is not allowed.
 
Caution: If you want to track multiple conversions of the same type for the same user—such as an upsell after an initial sale—you MUST provide a unique Reference value for each Action, Engagement, or Sales pixel. For example, the Reference value could be product1, product2, etc. 
 
4.    If you place the tracking pixel in the Pixels setting of a tracking link, you’ll need to answer “Yes” to the question “Adding this to a tracking link?” in the Advanced Settings. If you answer “No” to this question, the tracking pixel will attribute its conversion to the tracking pixel it’s embedded in and not to the previous tracking link, as you were probably expecting it to.
 
Tip: To make it easier to correctly set up pixels for use in the Pixels setting of a tracking link (or rotator), there is a streamlined version of the Pixel Builder right in the Pixels tab of the link that enforces all of the correct settings.
